Treatments

When it comes to battling the seemingly endless battle against acne, people are always on the look out for the latest trend and miracle breakthrough. One of the most popular spa trends over the last ten years has been the emergence of microderm abrasion as a way to help skin appear healthy, young and blemish free. But is microderm abrasion right for acne treatments? Doctors still aren’t completely sure what even causes some acne outbreaks in some people, so is prescribing this new treatment wise? Before we answer this question, let’s take a look at exactly what microderm abrasion does.

From spas coast to coast and around the world, the microderm abrasion treatment has become part of almost every package offered at every price level. A microderm abrasion treatment is an extreme exfoliating experience where dead skin cells, dirt and other impurities are literally scrapped off the skin. Much like exfoliating masks and other treatments, a microderm abrasion treatment can be quite traumatic to the skin, but often times, it does a great job of lifting away unhealthy, dead particles and leaving only fresh, new, shiny skin on the surface.

So, does microderm abrasion work for acne sufferers? Unfortunately, the answer can vary by person. An occasional treatment, say once every two weeks, may help lift off excess oils and dirt from the face, but too much usage can actually do more damage than good. Most acne sufferers don’t realize that too much cleaning can leave the face without the natural oils it needs to keep the skin healthy. Unhealthy skin, in turn, is significantly more susceptible to acne outbreaks than healthy skin.

Microderm abrasion treatments, whether they be at a spa or with a handy cloth used at home, can be a great way to exfoliate the skin and keep excess dirt and oils from gathering  on the surface, but too much usage can be too much of a good thing.
