Acne

Contrary to what you might believe, every human being, at one time or another, has gotten a pimple. Even the children of famous movie stars get them, except then it is usually the top story on CNN. But there is a difference between a nasty pimple breakout because you enjoyed a bit too much greasy food or chocolate and a full-on acne outbreak. How can you tell the difference? Here are three warning signs that you have acne and not just pimples.

1.    Cracked, red and bleeding sores – This might be the most dramatic illustration between the two. No matter how many regular old pimples you might have, if you have cracked, bleeding or open sores among your pimples, you have acne. You should seek the professional advice of a trained dermatologist right away to find out what your next step should be.

2.    No breaks – If you have regular old pimples, you will likely go through phases where you have outbreaks and then you don’t. They come and go, seemingly like the tides. But for those unlucky sufferers who have acne, there is no real break between waves. They might move around on your face or change in severity, but if you constantly have severe amounts of pimples on your face, you likely have full blown acne.

3.    Family History – Doctors still aren’t completely sure what causes acne in teens and adults, but they are sure that if you have a sibling or a parent that had acne, chances are, you will as well. Most parents will be on the lookout for the early signs of acne so that they can get you to a medical professional as quickly as possible, but if they haven’t, ask about their history to see how likely you are to have something more than just pimples.
