Scientists have known for many years that the ocean contains a wealth of information and useful material. The ocean is full of life, some of which is yet to be discovered. It is full of mysteries. The ocean also provides entertainment and exercise to millions who visit its beaches every year. It also has healing properties. Anyone who has gone for a swim in the ocean with a cut on their hand or a scraped knee can testify to the fact that minor wound heal faster when exposed to ocean water.
The component of ocean water that make this phenomenon possible is salt.
Epsom Salt is a naturally occurring mineral compound, magnesium sulfate. It is a component of ocean water and it has many medical uses. It can be used as a bath soak for sore muscles or to soothe itchy skin conditions, and it can be taken by mouth as a natural laxative, to name just a few. Epsom Salt is an excellent anti-inflammatory treatment and it reduces redness and irritation. It is used extensively in sports medicine as first aid for strains, sprains and pulled muscles. It is very effective as a natural acne treatment and is one of the mildest natural treatments available.
Epsom Salt is readily available at any grocery store or drugstore. It can be found in the health and beauty department, usually with the first-aid supplies. A five-pound bag typically costs only a few dollars. It should be stored in an airtight container because it can soak up moisture from the air and stick together in clumps.
For body acne, Epsom Salt can be added to a warm bath. For facial acne, use a tablespoon of Epsom Salt for every two cups of warm water. Apply solution to face with a soft cloth, rinse and pat dry. Keep solution away from eyes. This treatment can be used every day.
Another product, Sea Salt, is obtained by evaporating ocean water. It is a coarse salt that is used in gourmet cooking and has a different flavor than regular table salt. Sea Salt contains Epsom Salt and several other minerals. It can be used the same way as Epsom Salt for the treatment of acne. At the grocery store, it may be found either in the baking supplies section next to the table salt or in the health and beauty section next to the Epsom Salt. When using either Epsom or Sea Salt as a bath soak for acne, you can add a few drops of lavender essential oil to the bath water. The mixture is very effective for body acne and as an extra benefit, it can relax away stress and sore muscles.
Most people do not have any problems or negative reactions to topical application of Epsom Salt or Sea Salt. However as with all natural acne treatments, if you have any problems, you might want to quit using it and talk with your doctor or homeopath about your other potential options.
